Exceptional Original 1930s Vintage Rust Orange, Green, Yellow And Black Plaid Asymmetrical Velvet Dress

This exquisite dress was made in the 1930s from sumptuous black velvet with a stunning plaid pattern in shades of green, rust orange and mustard yellow, such an iconic colour palette of the era. It was cut in the elegant slim but loose style of the period, gently skimming the wearer’s curves. Clever piece work adds asymmetric styling to the dress through the insertion of triangular panels adorned with charming metal buttons at the front bust and across the back. This piece work continues through the ingenious use of panels at the waist which plays with the plaid pattern to intentionally create an offset design. The skirt falls loosely to a flattering longer length and leg of mutton sleeves add a final design flourish. The dress fastens with poppers on the wearer’s left side.

The dress is in good condition, however there are some repairs, particularly at the underarm as well as a few small areas of wear to the velvet and some loose stitching at the sleeves as pictured.

This garment is available to purchase with or without dress shields. These clever little contraptions have been made by our seamstress to an original 1940s pattern and can be simply attached to your garment by tack stitching at the corners of the underarm seam, pinning (we wouldn’t recommend that, it hurts if it goes wrong, so if you try this, it is at your own risk only) or inserting tiny poppers. They then stand ready to absorb any sweat and body odours as needed and you can simply detach and launder them instead of your garment, saving you a fortune in dry cleaning bills.

They are equally suitable for suits, blazers and dresses and come in pure white cotton.

They are universally sized and super easy to use even for a sewing novice as only a couple of tiny stitches are required at each side to secure them.
